This video has done the rounds a bit and I wanted to address a few…. snags…. that have been brought up.
I know my varnishing ‘technique’ has been called into question 🤣…it’s actually better, although not as aesthetically pleasing, not to do it all in one direction (up/down left/right), you’re more likely to see the varnish brush strokes. And providing the whole surface is covered in an even thin layer I don’t really care how it goes on.
Also, from the many hours I’ve spent trawling to find the answer to the ‘don’t pour the varnish on’ debate, all I have found is that it’s not recommended as varnish can dry quickly. I varnished this painting in 49 seconds, quicker if I hadn’t of slowed it down for the video. The particular varnish I use does not dry in 49 seconds. The other thing I can think of is running the risk of adding too much. But, Gamblin Gamvar can be removed quite easily. I have had to a couple of times.
My paintings have never suffered because of my haphazard brush strokes or pools of varnish.
I know people will have their own opinions and sets of rules that they follow.
I’m someone who will search endlessly to find the answer to something and would only use something in a way that I thought to be safe and wouldn’t compromise a piece of my work.
To close, we’re all individuals who should be able to make our own choices. We all have access to pretty much the same information. No one has ever been born with all the knowledge. We have to learn as we go, whether that’s by ourselves or with help.

Some say that artists should stick to a certain…

Some say that artists should stick to a certain…topic…theme. That it’s easier to become recognisable. It’s creates a more cohesive collection.
But I like experimenting. I like creating different styles, different themes, using different techniques. And it’s entirely possible to have a ‘style’ that works across the board, and it’s entirely possible to be completely different too.
Who gives a hoot what other people say we should or shouldn’t/ can or can’t do with our paints. What we create is down to us. And if today I want to paint a seascape and tomorrow I decide to have a play with abstract, you can bet I will. Never apologise for being you 🖤

Sumptuous gold with my favourite deep green. Little bursts of white and pale green to break it up. I’m debating adding some real gold leaf to add another dimension, but I’ll have to varnish it first.

Okay so who is enjoying the heat in the UK right now?! I know we get a bit of a bad rep for complaining when the mercury rises above 20c, but we are just not equipped to handle any kind of heat. Aircon is reserved for supermarkets. The air turns into soup. There is no relief.
But apart from that, it’s lovely. Sort of.
On another note, I know that this app is really not in anyones good book at the moment, so in true British style I’ve decided to talk about the weather when there isn’t much else to talk about 😂😂

No I’m not talking about doughnuts. You can glaze oil paintings.
This simplest way of explaining it is: you’re adding a transparent paint layer over a dried opaque layer. It won’t mix with the colour beneath. I used a transparent paint and mixed it with a little medium.
I’m not sure how many people use it solely for the purpose of changing the overall colour of a piece they don’t like like me, but there are many ways glazing can be utilised in layers to add depth to paintings.
I only know a little, but there’s a myriad of information on Google if the subject interests you 😊

I love the warmth. The light it emits. It fills a space with its warming glow. It’s comforting.
This piece has to be my favourite make of the year, so far at least.

Some dreams seem entirely out of reach, others closer when you look at them from a different perspective.
For a long time I’ve talked of my dream of owning my own home, and that if I sold 50 paintings at £1000 each, I’d have a nice sized deposit (after taking away the tax persons slice of the pie of course). So, I think now is as good a time as any to implement my strategy. I’ll be working on some larger pieces over the next couple of years so that I can bring it to reality.
I actually have a beautiful purple creation that will soon be heading to my website that will be the first piece towards my deposit 🥰
